Basil
Latin name: Basil
Sun or Shade: Sun
Drought Resistant? No.
Perennial? Annual Herb
Hardiness Zone: Tender

Basil is an easy herb to grow from seed or plant, and is not only useful as a kitchen herb, but has many beautiful varieties as well.

Basil requires adequate moisture, good drainage and full sun. It is tender to cold, so make sure there is no danger of frost and the soil is well warmed before stting out plants.

Fertilize regularly, and pinch off flowers as they appear to extend the life of the plant and to allow harvesting of the leaves over a long period.

There are both green and red varities, and ones with large broad leaves to tiny delicate ones. Varities range in height from 8-24 inches. My favorite varieties for cooking are ...and for ornamental use in the garden I love...

If you are growing your plants from seed, start indoors about 6 weeks before its time to set out the plants in your area.
