Bleeding heart is an old fashioned shade plant in already in many gardens. The plant emerges in early spring, has blue green, almost maple leaf shaped foliage, and has arching sprays of pink to red flowers in mid spring that look just like, well, a bleeding heart.
They bloom for several weeks, then the plant goes dormant and dies down to the ground in summer, to come back next spring.
Poisonous.
There are several new varieties, including one, "Luxuriant" that has a more ferny foiliage, blooms later, and does not die back.
Also available is a golden leaved variety called "Gold Heart".
Grows to 24 inches tall and as wide, needs moisture and no afternoon sun. Good combo with hosta.
