Blue Mist Shrub
Latin name: Caryopteris
Sun or Shade: Sun
Drought Resistant? Yes
Perennial? Shrub
Hardiness Zone: 5-8
Blue mist shrub is an easy shrub to grow in a mixed border or as an informal hedge. It is controlled in size, only reaching 3 feet in height and spread.
It is covered in mists of delicate blue flowers in late summer, over cool blue gray foliage. It is drought resistant and self seeds, so you will have free voluteer shrubs year after year that can easily be transplanted in spring to another location.
They are gorgeous paired with a deep yellow yarrow, or coreopsis, and even sunflowers. They have a long bloom time, and are attractive to butterflies and bees.
Prune back in early spring as they bloom on new wood.
Does very well in our high desert summer heat.
I recommend "Longwood Blue" but they have a new golden leaved variety worth trying called "Sunshine Blue".
