Butterfly Bush
Latin name: Buddleia
Sun or Shade: Sun
Drought Resistant? Yes
Perennial? Shrub
Hardiness Zone: 5-9
Butterfly bush is an increasingly popular shrub used in drought resistant borders and landscapes. Also known as "summer lilac" it is easy to grow in well drained soil, and is drought resistant once established.
Covered with beautiful panicle flowers in late summer, it is very attractive to butterflies, and good for a garden wanting to attract birds, as it provides cover.
It is fast growing, reaching up to 8-10 feet tall and as wide in just two years.
Cut back to 2 feet in early spring for the best flowering. It is slow to emerge in spring, but catches up quickly.
Soft silverly leaves are a great foil to other plants as well.
Highly recommended. Editors picks for varieties include "Pink Delight" Black Knight" and "White Ball". Also a fragrant yellow variety is available called "Honeycomb".
