Attract Birds to Your Yard by Creating a Backyard Bird Sanctuary
By Inez Calender

If you are a bird watcher or someone new to the hobby of birdwatching, you can create an environment to attract birds to your own back yard.

The creation of your own private bird sanctuary will allow you to view birds from the comfort of your home. You may be used to seeing common birds in your yard but with thoughtful landscaping, songbirds, migratory birds, and other more interesting kinds of birds will flock to your home.

Offer birds water by building a small pond or purchasing a birdbath. Remember to refresh the water to avoid mosquitoes.

Place bird feeders in your yard in a sheltered location. Fill it with black sunflower seeds, more nutritious and easy to crack than the standard seeds. A suet feeder attracts birds in the winter months. A hummingbird feeder filled with nectar will draw those beautiful little jewels right outside your window. Thistle feeders are popular with chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, and goldfinch.

Provide shelter for birds by planting trees, shrubbery, and herbaceous plants. In addition you can find plants that offer food, even in the winter.

Learn about the plants that grow in your region and landscape with native plants. Birds seek out native plants that offer the food and shelter they need to thrive.

It may take some time to establish your own back yard bird sanctuary. The process is educational and fun. Working in the garden is good both physically and spiritually. After a few years, you'll find yourself living in a mini-paradise. The air will be sweeter and cooler in the shade of the trees that you planted to attract the birds.

Several years ago, I went out with some people to find a snow bunting, a bird that neither my companions nor I had ever seen. We drove for some time and stood silent in several locations, never spotting the bird. Then, last winter, I saw something in my yard that I knew I had never seen before - a beautiful little black and white bird. On closer inspection, it was a snow bunting, right there in my own backyard!

Landscaping in order to attract birds to your home will increase the value of your property. Your home will be a sanctuary for birds as well as people - you and your family. If you ever attempt to sell your home, the beautiful landscaping and the sound of birds singing will please prospective buyers.
