Old fashioned pinks are a cottage garden favorite, blooming in wodnerful pinks, reds, violets and whites.
Most of them are short lived perennials that are evergreen to semi evergreen, bloom spring through summer, and are no more than 12 inches high. Pinks make great edging plants. They require very good drainage. Poor drainage will make them very short lived. They also don't tolerate drying out. In my hot garden, I try to plan some afternoon shade.
"Bath's Pink" is a heavy blooming spring variety that is still one of the best. "Zing Rose" and "Raspberry Parfait" bloom through most of the summer for me. There are many varieties to meet your bloomings needs.
"Sweet William" is the annual fragrant form of Dianthus, that grows to 3 feet high.
Carnations also belong to this family, and have the same needs as pinks. They are a little taller from 12 inches to 3 feet, and bloom in summer. Obviously, they make great and long lasting cut flowers.
