Hollyhock
Latin name: Alcea
Sun or Shade: Sun.
Drought Resistant? No.
Perennial? Yes, also self seed.
Hardiness Zone:

Hollyhock is a favorite old fashioned perennial, technically an annual or bienial, but grown as a perennial for its ability to self sow. Found in both single and double blossoms, they grow almost 6 feet, and can require staking or a fence behind them in windy areas. Can be prone to rust, especially in humid areas. Heavy feeders. Tip: Do not cut down to the ground for winter...water will enter the hollow stalks and freeze the plant to the root, killing it. Blooms June-July.
