Hey there, fellow garden enthusiasts! Can I let you in on a little secret? I’m absolutely obsessed with garden art, and there’s something magical about garden spheres that just makes my heart happy. You know those fancy glass gazing balls from the Victorian era? Well, they’re stunning, but let’s be real – they cost a fortune and one wrong move with the lawn mower… yikes!

That’s why I’m super excited to share these creative DIY garden globe ideas that won’t shatter your dreams (or your budget). Whether you’re a total beginner or a crafting pro, I’ve got something perfect for you!

Why Garden Spheres? (Besides Being Totally Gorgeous!)

Think about it – gardens are all about the circle of life, right? That’s what makes garden balls and spheres so perfect for outdoor spaces. They’re like little planets in your personal universe of plants and flowers. Plus, they look amazing year-round, even when your perennials are taking their winter nap!

10 Incredible DIY Garden Globe Projects You’ll Love

1. Rock-Solid Gabion Garden Spheres (Just $20!)

Okay, this first one’s a game-changer from our friend at Bonney Lassie. Remember those wire flower baskets collecting dust in your shed? It’s time to give them a gorgeous makeover! Fill them with rocks, and boom—you’ve got sophisticated garden orbs that look like they cost hundreds. Seriously, these are genius!

2. Concrete Garden Orbs (Easier Than You Think!)

Don’t let the word “concrete” scare you! These modern DIY garden balls are super fun to make. Think of it as playing with mud pies but for grown-ups. I first fell in love with this idea after seeing the incredible concrete spheres from Greencube Landscapes – their garden designs are absolutely jaw-dropping! While they don’t share their professional secrets, I’ve figured out how to create something similar at home. The result? Stunning garden spheres that look like they belong in a fancy sculpture garden.

Pro Tip:

  • If your concrete is too wet, Add small amounts of dry mix until it reaches a “peanut butter” consistency.
  • If you see cracks forming, you might be unmolding too soon. Give it an extra day to cure.
  • Getting smooth surfaces: Use a plastic mold and coat it with vegetable oil for easy release.
  • Avoiding air bubbles: Tap the mold gently with a rubber mallet while filling.
  • Creating texture: Try adding aggregate or using different finishing techniques while still slightly wet.

Don’t worry – I’ve got a detailed tutorial that breaks it down into simple steps. Trust me, once you make your first one, you’ll be hooked!

Pro Tips for Garden Globe Success

Listen, I’ve made ALL the mistakes so you don’t have to! Here’s what I’ve learned:

  • Location, Location, Location: Try tucking garden globes into quiet corners or using them to jazz up boring pathways.
  • The Power of Three: Garden balls look best in groups of three (it’s some kind of garden magic, I swear!)
  • Mix It Up: Different sizes create more visual interest – think small, medium, and “wow, that’s impressive!”
  • Weather Wisdom: Make sure your materials can handle your climate (nobody wants their garden art to melt in the summer!).
  • Think Ahead: Consider how much maintenance you want before choosing your project.

Ready to Get Rolling?

See what I did there? 😄 But seriously, these DIY garden sphere projects are such a fun way to add personality to your outdoor space. Whether you’re into modern concrete garden orbs or rustic garden globe balls, there’s a perfect project just waiting for you to try.

Those gardening globes look lovely, Kathy! I’ve been looking for ways to make my garden look more appealing. I want the grandchildren to see and learn how fun gardening can be! Do you have any other suggestions on how I could excite them? I’ve also thought that I would make a garden patch, so they can plant pumpkins in them for Halloween.

Just let them enjoy being out there with you. I make sure they have gloves and tools, just like I use, because they like that and feel valued as gardeners. I also let them make some decisions about the garden, within reason. There are four of them that LOVE being in the garden with me, and I love it, too… we have so much fun in the garden!!!
